AUSTRALIA has long allowed its residents to use a number of traditional incense stoves and smokehouses to heat their homes.
Now, it is proposing new rules that could change that.
Key points:New rules could change the way people use incenseInland and inland waterways will be exempt from the banThe Federal Government has already banned the use of incense on some beachesThe Federal government has already prohibited the use the use to heat up hot water in some inland waterways, such as the Great Barrier Reef.
The Federal Department of Agriculture (DA) says it will now issue guidelines for the manufacture and sale of incenses.
But it will be up to states and territories to decide how to apply the changes.
“It will be the responsibility of each state and territory to determine whether or not it is in the best interest of the public for incense to be allowed in their waters,” the department said in a statement.
“The Federal department is confident that the changes to the current regulation will be upheld.”
